---------MOVED TO NEW LOCATION -- less bushwacking --

There are far too few foggy, peaty moors in southern Maine. The Saco Heath does a fine stand in, however. This stamp is inspired by the classic The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Conan Doyle, and (modestly) based on the original artwork by Sidney Paget.
It is a fifteen minute walk through red maples, hemlocks, and a few tupelo trees to the “moor.” Just before the bog starts, a large twisted tree rises to the right of the trail. The area around it is clear, and a peek around it will reveal it to be quite hollow. Stand with your back to this hollow (note the longitude and latitude clues someone else marked inside the tree.) Notice one branch overhead which reaches to another tree four paces ahead. The box is in the ground behind this tree, under some birch sticks. The first set of benches on the boardwalk have been destroyed, but five minutes walking will bring you to another set where you can stamp up and get a good taste of the heath. These are placed just where the heath opens up. Palm warblers and Yellowthroats flit through the air here in the spring and early summer, a very nice spot to sit. Please rehide well, as the area has been visited (literally) by vandals and thieves (a perfect place for Holmes?)
P.S. For more information on this area and a trail map, visit the Saco Bay Trails website, and grab a trail guide at the trail head. Bring blue ink, and Enjoy!
