The Mississippi Palisades State Park is 2 miles north of Savanna, IL and less than an hour south of Galena, IL. The palisades are steep limestone bluffs overlooking the Mississippi river. Rock climbers have frequented this area since the late 1930s.

Take the south entrance into the park. Drive past the shelter and take a right onto the road that leads down. Follow this road up the hill to a parking area on your left side. You have three trailheads to choose from; pick the trail named after he who stands guard. Walk this easy trail until you can look over the Guardian. Perhaps you will see people climbing over the Guardian, seeking to discover his secrets.

The center post gives the best view of the crack running down his body. Take the bearing of that crack. Before you leave, look down to see how many plank widths it took to build the platform for the Guardian’s visitors.

What could the Guardian be guarding? Perhaps he guards the Twin Sisters. To find the sisters you must walk a different path. Back to your car. Continue south down the road you were traveling before you visited the Guardian. You will come to a fork in the road. One road is paved, the other gravel. Park on the gravel side and look for the sign pointing to the Sisters. If the road has been too long and the drinks too many, fear not – facilities are at hand. Feel better?

The Sisters await up the “Ever-Green” trail. Stay on the trail until the Twin Sisters come into view. At the top of a stone stairway, on the left, are situated two columns of rock standing on a common pedestal. Take a moment to say hello to the sisters, then look to the right and see their little brother. Turn towards the little brother and follow the path on his right side. Up and around you go.

At the top you will see a path that gratefully lacks any more stairs. If you continue down this path you can find a place to rest on the right side. Breathe in through the nose and out the mouth while you enjoy the view. Now that your heart rate is back to normal, on we go. Continue down the path. Keep your eyes averted as you pass the evergreen straddling the oak. After trudging up a hill you will see an oak that seems to block your way. Fortunately, the path sidesteps to the right of this tree. Pass a trio of oaks on your right, one leaning across your path in front of Siamese twins. Keep the twin theme in mind as you switch your gaze to the left side of the trail.

Pass one set of twins with one healthy and one sickly twin. Continue a short way down where you will find the final set of twins about five feet in from the edge of the path. (If you reach the fork in the trail, you've gone too far.)

Across the trail from the twins you will find two smaller trees standing next to each other. Stand in between these two trees. Subtract 240 from the bearing taken near the Guardian. The resulting number will point the way to your goal. The number of plank widths in the Guardian’s platform tells you the number of steps you must take from the edge of the path to reach the end of your journey.

As this is a heavily traveled path, please try to not create an obvious trail to the box, and rehide it well.

Please email us through this site and let us know how the box is doing. Thanks, and enjoy!!!
