Jim Hogg is a neat little park tucked away in Rusk, operated by the city. There you can find a replica of Jim Hogg's (the first governor of Texas born in Texas) birthplace, examples of typical period houses, and tucked away in the woods, not highly publicized, is an iron ore strip mining area.

The strip mining was done in the late 1800's, and the ore was removed by horse-driven carts and taken to what is now Rusk State Hospital and processed.

You could spend the whole day in this little park - it has great hiking trails and even a tame deer that may surprise you as it comes out of the woods to walk along with you. Baby Bear has a stamp in the park which is fun to find!

To find Starry, Starry Night, find your way to the Iron Ore Mining Site (there are several ways to get there, so find it on the park maps and pick your route!). Approach the sign and read the interesting history of the site, then turn with your back to the sign and set your compass to 300 degrees and pace 26 paces (single step paces for a 5'8" man - adjust accordingly) to a large pine tree. Ten degrees to the left of that pine tree is another pine tree, roughly 7 paces out (through a small ravine). Look behind that tree, and under an iron ore rock!

Our hike encompassed some very interesting spiders and their webs, some almost unnoticeable red mushrooms, several unique species of vegetation, a beautiful caterpillar I've yet to identify, some unusually large wasps, some different species of acorns from the ones typically found in East Texas forests. If you enjoy observing flora and fauna, this place is for you!

Have fun with it and enjoy the park! All the trails leading to the mining area have short, steep inclines, some of them rocky, so be careful. Oh, and bug spray is a must!
