The Spencer State Forest Letterbox and the Howe State Park letterbox can both be found beginning at a parking lot in Howe State Park. The Spencer letterbox is an easy walk of about 1.3 miles on cart roads that are mostly flat. The Howe Park letterbox is a short walk of less than a mile, but on a hilly, stony, twisty trail.
The Spencer State Forest is located in the town of Spencer, on Howe Park Road. From the intersection of Rtes. 9 and 31 in Spencer, turn south on Rt. 31. Howe Park Rd. will be on your right at 1.1 miles. The road sign is hard to see but there is a sign pointing to Spencer State Forest. The parking area is 1.2 miles down the road. Park in the small lot on the right side of the road.
Spencer State Forest is a 965 acre preserve that provides swimming, picnicking, hiking, canoeing, fishing and other activities. The Midstate Trail runs close to the park.
To find the letterbox, cross the road to the large parking lot. Locate the bulletin board. From this point take a compass reading of 165 degrees. Walk across the lot in this direction, across a stretch of lawn and you will see the trail. The trail meanders in a generally southerly direction through magnificent pine forests and along Howe Pond. At about .4 mile the trail moves away from the pond and begins to ascend. After a few tenths of a mile the trail descends down to a T intersection. On a tree is a "Bridle Trail" sign. Fifteen feet into the woods from this tree at 345 degrees notice a small stump. The Spencer State Letterbox is in a hard to notice stone wall beside this stump.
To return to your car, follow the trail to the left. It will shortly lead you through the Ranger station and to a paved road. Turn left and you will find the parking lot.
THIS BOX HAS BEEN REMOVED. WILL REPLACE SOON
Howe State Park is named after a famous family of inventors. The most famous is Elias Howe who is credited with the invention of the sewing machine in 1846. The family home is just to the west of this parking lot. My stamp is a depiction of the first sewing machine.
To find the Howe Park letterbox, walk towards the west from the parking lot along the roadway. Stop and read the plaque a short distance away. Then go through or around gate #5. Cross the little bridge on the left. Continue past the next bridge, pass between several boulders into another small parking area, and cross the next little bridge after admiring the waterfall across the street. The trail begins to the right after the bridge and is an immediate uphill struggle along a rocky trail. When it levels off at the top, turn right at a T or Y intersection. The trail goes uphill again. You will see railroad tracks to your left. You may even see a train if you're here at the right time. You will begin going downhill. Take the next trail to the right. Pass into a pine forest. At a faint intersection, continue straight towards and past a one eyed tree. Turn left at the T. Shortly you will step over 2 downed trees. Walk 15 paces after the second downed tree. To your right at 90 degrees see a 4 - 5 foot tall rotted stump. The Howe Park letterbox is in front of this stump under some rotted wood. Please rehide carefully after logging in. To return to parking lot, reverse direction and follow trail straight down to small parking area.
