"Guadalupe Bass" Letterbox

Status of Letterbox: REPORTED MISSING DUE TO FLOODS - 6/10/2004 ******************************************************************************************

Bend, Texas – San Saba County – Central Texas Hills Region
Colorado Bend State Park

Date of Placement: 1/31/03
Difficulty: Easy
Total Distance to letterbox: About 100 yards
Placed by Baby Bear

"Guadalupe Bass" letterbox commemorates the Texas State Fish. It is
located in Colorado Bend State Park, which offers great excursion on
the weekends to Gorman Falls and several wild caves. Also available
are 2.7 miles of hiking only, and 9 miles of hike/bike trails. Bald
eagles are even seen in the park, as well as the State Fish.

Directions:

>From San Saba, take US 190 east to FM 580. Turn right on FM 580 to
FM 501, go left to Bend, Texas. From Bend, follow the park signs on
a gravel road for 6 miles to its end at a T-junction. Go right and
drive to the parking area where this road terminates.

To the letterbox:

Locate the "Spicewood Springs Trail" sign where the road ended.
Starting at this sign, go Southwest down the large path, following
the flow of the Colorado River for about 75 yards (145 paces). Look
for a huge cottonwood tree on your left, standing alone. From the
path, walk Southeast for 18 paces to this tree. Now locate another
cottonwood tree to the South, which is leaning at 45 degrees, and is
near the river. Walk 20 paces to the South to this tree.
The "Guadalupe Bass" has jumped out of the river and landed in the V
of this tree (about belt high), and is covered by bark. Give him
some air, but be sure to hide him well so predators will not carry
him away.
