NOTE: this box made it 4 1/2 years till a geocache appeared near by. Then, two weeks or so later, the guts of the box disappeared and the container was left sitting on top of the rock. What a conincidence.

Marietta, the first organized American settlement in the Northwest Territory, was founded as the first town in Ohio in 1788. There are many historical sites to be seen in the town and many activities throughout the year. Visit www.mariettaohio.org to find out what all is available and goes on throughout the year.

Note: If you only have time for one letterbox while in Marietta, this is the one to visit. It is a drive up, kid and wheelchair friendly. If your in great shape and need an hour hike from downtown you can make it, but you have one heck of a hill to climb.. I prefered to drive.
CLUES:
Now lets go hunt for a letter box.
Please bring a stamp pad, your stamp, an old rag and a pen.
Difficulty: Very Easy
Terrain: High up. Distance. from parked car.....50 feet. Time: 15 minutes from parked car. Please be discrete.

In Marietta get on H.W. 7 and go south across the Muskingum river. After crossing the river go about 2/10 of a mile to H.W. 676 and get on it, going up a very steep hill. At the top the road bends left and shortly thereafter, at the fire station, you will turn left onto Bartlett street. Go to the end of Bartlett and at the stop sign stop, then turn right onto Belleview St.. Park on the curb and walk across the street to the wrought iron fenced area. Observe the map of Marietta and LOOKOUT......view the city and town of Williamstown WV across the Ohio River (I do not recommend the viewer). Next go next door to the bench area between the two street lights.
Sit down on the bench at the end closest to the memorial plaque and read the plague and take a short break. Twist around to the left and see if you can see a flat rock under the shrubs in back of the END of the bench. Oh well, get up and DISCRETELY go reach under those shrubs, pull back the mulch until you feel the flat rock and slide it over. Remove the letter box from the hole and wipe off the box. Sit back down and leisurely look at the stamps and do some stamping of your own. Once you are done please DISCRETELY replace the box, rock and mulch, for the next person. On your way out, drive on down Belleview St. and get a closer look at town and the neat house on the lower hillside toward the end of Belleview. If you have not toured the town yet I advise you to do so. It is a lovely town with class and lots to do and see. And when you get time, please drop me a line on the condition of the box.
