The Airline Trail - "The shortest train between New York City and Boston"

Location: Airline Trail, Hebron, Tolland Co., Connecticut

Letterboxes: 1

Planted: 9/16/2000 by Moonshadow.
Foster care: 7/31/2003 by The Bird Stamper.
New stamp: 10/10/2003 carved by RTRW (thanks).

Time: A little over an hour, depending on how long you linger.
Length: One and a quarter miles, parking lot to box.
Difficulty: Easy, flat walking on an old railway bed.

Directions:

From route 2, take exit 18, route 16. From either direction, turn right onto 16 east. Go 0.4 mile and turn left onto 16 east and 85 north. Go 0.1 mile and bear left, leaving 16 east. Go 0.3 mile and go straight towards 2 west, leaving 85 north. Go 0.2 mile and bear right onto Old Hebron Rd. Note: Old Hebron Rd. bears right at an unmarked intersection after the golf course. Go 2.9 miles and turn left onto Grayville Rd. Go 0.5 mile and park in the parking lot on the right by the trail crossing. Note: This parking lot is in the Amston section of Hebron. If this area if full, there is another lot 0.2 mile ahead on the left.

The hike:

From the parking area, cross the road and take the trail directly in front of you. After one mile, you will cross an old railroad bridge rebuilt with wood. Continue for a quarter mile, and you will come upon an iron bridge. About 100 yards before the bridge, there is a trail that breaks off to your left. Take that trail. You will go down a short hill and enter an evergreen cathedral. Follow the trail toward the stream. Walk upstream until you reach the base of the bridge. Turn to your right (away from the stream) and behind a bush, under a small pile of rocks, along the side of the bridge support you will find the box! Take care to cover it back up. Seal the box tightly and put some rocks on top of it, as the stream rises at times and can flood the box. Retrace your steps to return to your car.

Happy letterboxing!
