Narragansett Whiterock
LOCATION: Voluntown, CT

POSTED: 10-Dec-1998

CLUES: Today's hike follows the Narragansett Trail toward Bullet and High Ledges. The trail heads West from CT 49, 4.8 miles south of its junction with CT 138 in Voluntown. You will find ample parking just behind an old white church directly across from the sign marking the crossing of the Narragansett Trail on CT 49. From this point, you want to follow the trail in a Westerly direction toward Wyassup Lake. The trail starts off very civilized, but soon becomes more remote following a seasonal brook. You will continue to follow the Blue Blazes for about 30-40 minutes before you need to worry about today's hidden treasure.

At your first T Intersection note the blazed tree with six lives, you will be referring back to it soon enough. Continue to follow the blazed trail until it crosses what looks like an old fireroad running North/South. Proceed in a Northerly direction, passing the remains of an old stone structure on your right. Can you still see the tree with six lives?

Watch for a stonewall intersection on your right marked by a tree similar to the first. When you find it, you should have a sighting of 110 degrees to the six lived tree. Take a new heading of 255 degrees, and proceed for 22 paces. You will pass through a break in the wall, and immediately on your left will be the "Whiterock of Narragansett".

For more information on the area and a 6 mile loop suggestion, refer to Hike 31 in David, Gerry, and Sue Hardys' book 50 Hikes in Connecticut or continue to explore the blazed trail that lies beyond on your own.
