This box IS in circulation again!
Terrain: Easy – paved path, short climb on dirt path
Clues: Easy – compass useful
Time: About 15 minutes, longer to finish the loop
This is one of three boxes we've place (so far!) celebrating the diversity of Baltimore City parks, particularly the waterways. Check out our others at Stoney Run (unfortunately this one is currently unavailable) and the Jones Falls!
The trek to this box begins by entering Herring Run park from the Argonne Drive/Harford Road side, going down the drive past the basketball courts. Parking is available at the bottom, near the two gates at the Harford Road overpass. Dogs are welcome - just be sure to leash them as there are bikers, joggers, lots of other dogs, and it's city law. You'll also want to heed the "polluted" signs and not let them in the water.
Starting down the path around the silver gate on the left, follow Herring Run into the park. You'll eventually pass the field with two defunct ball diamonds. Continue through the rolling woods along the stream.
At the Third Tributary and large storm culvert, go to the end of the guard rail on the left. From the end of the fence, take about 20 paces to the faint trail on the left.
Take a compass bearing of about 30 degrees and find the large tree just off the trail. Your prey lies just behind the tree, under some sticks & debris. Please be discreet, as you'll be VERY visible from the path. And please re-place carefully to hide it!
Retrace your steps, or, to finish the loop, continue to Belair Road and follow the sidewalk south to reenter the park, making your way back to the parking area on the opposite side of the stream.
