Elephant Walk
LOCATION: Ledyard, CT

POSTED: 24-Mar-1999

I'VE HEARD THAT THIS MIGHT BE MISSING. I'LL BE OUT TO CHECK ON IT VERY SOON. 'THE RAM' 2-21-2006
CLUES:

You will first have to locate the Avery Preserve -
West Tract on Avery Hill Rd. in Ledyard,
0.3 miles north of Rte 214. Parking
is available at the trail head for the East Tract.
Careful crossing the street. You can find maps at
the sign on the West side. Wear your boots if you
don't mind some mud or do the walk
in drier weather as the trail gets rather boggy.

The trail splits after crossing a trickle,
follow bearing 50 degrees or you'll be in a pickle.
Over hill and over dale,
continue to follow this winding trail.
Face to face with a stone wall and rusting car,
you're half way there, it's not that far!
Before the next bearing, 2 streams you'll cross,
stepping stones to assist you, covered in moss.
After 2 stone walls you will see,
a backward 4 made from a tree.
From the tree, straight 40 feet,
take the 240 degree path where the 2 trails meet,
The path turns south through another wall of stone,
you'll be their soon, please don't moan!
Find the tree with the arrows double,
where trails meet and waters bubble.
Now 90 degrees from this tree,
to the first stone wall that you see.
40 paces past this spot, a splitting tree,
and a trail-side rock.
From up on this rock, bearing 80 degrees,
The Elephant Rock you will see.
Climb up for a visit, find 170 degrees,
and spy the rock between 2 trees.
Standing on this rock, sight 210 degrees,
6 paces forward & down on your knees.
Turn it over, don't be weak,
for underneath is what you seek!

Once you've found it and stamped your book,
rest awhile and visit the pond and brook.
Or continue to follow the path you were on,
It'll take you back home, long before dawn.
