Letterboxing at the Poindexter Nature Preserve
(Easton, Connecticut)

*** CARVED AND PLANTED BY THE HARDY HIKERS 2003 ***
Adopted: January 2010 by Trailhead Tessie
Terrain: Easy
Time: about 1 hour at an easy pace
Clues: Easy
Number of boxes: 1 (handcarved)

Located in the Poindexter Nature Preserve (PNP). For online mapping or gps use #425 Judd Road - the trailhead is immediately south of that house, on the east side of the road. A trail map is available via the Aspetuck Land Trust website ( http://www.aspetucklandtrust.org/ ), although you need to register to view their maps. There is a very small pull-off next to the park sign and split rail gate, easy to miss. Snow will block the pull-off although the box will still be accessible unless snow is very deep.

From the entrance of PNP follow the white trail, your only option. Since the PNP is a nature preserve, there are many informative signs placed along the trails identifying natural phenomena, such as watch out for poison ivy (Tessie's note 2010: Most of the signs are no longer very legible). After crossing three stonewalls at some distance into the preserve, you will enter a field. The trail branches in the field, take the left branch to where it rejoins the right branch. Turn left, through the stonewall and stay on the trail as it turns to the right and into the pine grove. The trail meanders through the tall pines, it bears to the right and then at a double stonewall it turns left.

Please be respectful of these trails, be discrete when finding your box and replace them WHERE YOU FOUND THEM covering them well so others may enjoy the hunt.

Continue on the white trail deeper into the preserve. The trail exits the pine grove and gently descends toward a bridge across a brook. After crossing the brook, continue on the white trail past an intersecting red trail. Forward on the left of the white trail is the wild turkey sign, they have been seen in the area and you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a flock. A sign, describing a glacial phenomenon, a kettle hole follows on the left.

The Teddy Bear

Continue on the white trail passing the yellow trail on the right and onto the red trail on the right. Take the red trail up and around the hill. The red trail will be joined by the yellow trail coming in from the right at a break in a stonewall. You are close to the teddy bear letterbox. The teddy bear, like all bears likes a nice warm cave to rest in. This bear has selected a stone cave within the wall at hand. OK, so right now you have two choices. If you are familiar with Ursula Major, you will look in the correct direction first. At the base of the break in the stonewall is a full stone. Above the full stone are three stones, the stone in the middle is the teddy bear’s front door. Open the front door and find you quest. Please be respectful of these trails, be discrete when finding your box and replace them where you found them covering them well so others may enjoy the hunt.

After finding the teddy bear, continue on the red trail, up a bit more than down to the intersection with the whit trail. Turn left onto the white trail, you are now headed out of PNP along the trail that you entered by. Follow the white trail up the grade to the pine grove. Pass through the pine grove on the white trail and out to the field. At the field, take the left trail up a slight grade. At the top of the grade, on the right you will see the Poindexter bench. If you are tired or just wish to enjoy the beauty of the field, sit here a while and relax

To exit the preserve, follow the white trail out retracing the steps you arrived by.Please be respectful of these trails, be discrete when finding your box and replace them where you found them covering them well so others may enjoy the hunt.
