This is the first letterbox we’ve planted and is part of a planned series of boxes celebrating our favorite picnic spots. BorisDM, Pathfinder, Peanut, and our friend Daniel placed this box.

Bay Farm Conservation Area can be found on the Kinston/Duxbury border, on Landing Road. You can get there by taking Route 3 to exit 9. Then head north on Route 3A. After crossing the Jones River, take the next right on to Landing Road. You’ll cross back under Route 3. The parking lot will soon follow on your right.

Bay Farm was once part of a large dairy farm at the turn of the 20th century. Now it’s a very nice conservation area. In the summer time the large field is filled with wildflowers and all sorts of birds. In the fall and winter, the field is cut, but it’s still a great place to wander and explore. The rocky ledge provides a great view of Kinston Harbor.

Once you park in the parking lot, look for the information sign with a map of the trails. Begin your search here. You should be able to get to the letterbox and back within a half hour, though we suggest you wander around and enjoy the site for as long as you can. Of course, it’s also a great place for a picnic.

Follow the trail from the parking lot in a generally eastward direction. At the first fork, take the left branch. After a short distance the trail will intersect with the old road, along with several other trails. Take the trail heading east into the woods.

As soon as the trail enters the woods you’ll see a rock in the center of the path. Twenty paces down the trail you should find another rock in the center of the path. Take a compass bearing of 170 degrees and head off in that direction for 36 paces until you pass under a leaning cedar tree. You should find yourself at the end of a rock outcropping with a path turning along the rock face. Head that way.

Close to the rock face look for an inverted, U shaped stump on the ground. You’ll find the letterbox beneath the U, hidden behind a rock.

If you find this letterbox, please let us know. Since this is our first letterbox, we’d appreciate any feedback you have to offer concerning our clues.

**** Note: 7/28/06 - It's been reported, and I can confirm, there's lots of poison ivy in the area around the box, so please take the necessary precautions.****
