aka (Penguin Power ... what the seven year old wants to call it!)

Overview: Very easy, short .2 mile hike, with alot of bang for the buck. The toughest part is driving the obscure, but pretty country roads.

(Most of these driving directions are borrowed, with a tip o' the hat, from www.ecet.vtc.edu/~pchapin/water/hamilton.html . I have verified their accuracy)

Starting in the center of Townshend at the junction of Vermont Routes 30 and 35 (0.0mi), drive west on route 30 to West Townshend (4.6mi). Turn north onto the paved Windham Hill Road. At 9.0mi turn left onto the unpaved Burbees Pond Road. After a short distance this road turns to the right and comes to Burbees Pond. Just before the pond at 9.9mi turn left onto West Windham Road. This road skirts the edge of the pond and soon turns to the south. There are a couple of side roads that turn off West Windham Road, but you should follow the main route in each case. Eventually the road becomes quite narrow and it may be in poor condition at certain times of the year. At 12.8mi, shortly after a sharp right turn, you will come to an informal parking area on the left ... look close, and you should see a trail sign which says, I believe "Hamilton Falls Trail" or some such. If you come to a small sawmill on the right, you have gone a tad too far.

Follow the well delineated trail from this small parking area. After .1 mi or so, a trails bends off right in a switchback.
Follow this down a series of wooden stairs set into the slope. Stand on the bottom-most step and face 60 degrees. You will be looking pretty much directly toward the base of the Hamilton Falls, one of the more spectacular falls which Vermont has to offer. Follow this vector for about 17 paces ( defined as one adult left step and right step). Three boulders lay huddling here overlooking the brook that feeds off from the falls. Look carefully below these boulders, and you should find a playful penguin frolicking ...

Please replace carefully, and enjoy the falls!

footnote:
It felt too easy hiking just .1 miles to such a beautiful locale ... I understand Hamilton Falls can also be accessed via a 1 mile hike from Jamaica State Park. We hope to try this in the Spring, and revise the clues to this box, so folks can feel a little better about better "earning" this stamp!
