Shenandoah LbNA # 12296
|Placed Date||Nov 19 2004|
|Location||Big Meadows, Stanley, VA|
Start point: Skyline Drive. Dark Hollow Falls Trailhead. Mile point 50.5
Distance: about 1 mile, round trip
Difficulty: a little steep on the way down, just as steep coming back up.
Park in the lot and look for the trailhead sign.
Head downhill and cross a stone bridge.
Very quickly trail turns from paved to gravel.
Eventually you will pass a large stump, ~ 10 feet tall on the right side.
About 50 steps past this stump you will see a weird U-shaped branch of a tree sticking out toward the stream on the right.
As you count 28 steps beyond this U-arm of a tree you will navigate through an S-turn in the trail and pass a large (~ 5 feet in diameter) rock overlooking the stream.
At ~28 steps you will see some low rocks on the left side of the trail.
There is a single one nearer the trail and a pair more a few feet farther back.
Your prize lies behind these second two rocks.
