Banner of Rohan Letterbox
Lord of the Rings

Rohan, Land of the Horse-lords

Rohan is the rolling grass-lands that formed the Kingdom of the horse-lords, ruled by King Theoden from his Golden Hall at Edoras. The Rohirrim call themselves the Eotheod (Old English for “horse people”)
and their land the Riddermark – mark coming from the Old English mearc, meaning “ a land within a boundary.” It was on the plains of Rohan that Gandalf found, tamed and rode the horse, Shadowfax the Great – The Lord of all Horses.

This stamp is very similar to my personal traveler – The Symbol of Rohan. Instead of making it a negative image, I made it as a banner and carved it as a positive image. It is not the same stamp and if you find this box and also have my personal traveler, you can count it as an additional find.

Driving Directions:

Rt 2 East – Exit 13 – Right off the exit
Rt 2 west – Exit 13 – left off the exit

You will now be on Rt 66 in Marlborough. From the center of town (at the traffic light), continue straight on Rt 66 towards East Hampton. Within a mile, you will descend down a long hill. As you reach the bottom and start to ascend, take a left onto Flood Road. At the fork, Flood Road curves to the left. Stay on Flood Road and you will see a 25 MPH sign on the right hand side of the road and a parking space just beyond it. A little further, you’ll see a yellow sign indicating a curve in the road. On the left hand side you will see a parking area for 2 cars. The trail (logger’s road) starts at the yellow gate opposite the second parking area. You will be entering the Salmon River State Forest.

Clues:

Easy trail – total of 40 minutes round trip including stamping

Follow the logger’s road (trail) until you reach the pine grove. (For a site-seeing side trip, you can descend through the grove to see a tremendously huge and awesome pine tree on your right. Down below you will see Dickenson Creek. Many fishermen camp in this grove the night before Opening Day, but this is not where you will find your prize.) Continue on the trail until you see a large flat-faced rock – 3 feet tall on the left side of the trail. From this rock continue on the trail for 25 steps until you see a mamma boulder and 3 baby boulders on the left side of the trail. At Mamma, take a reading of 230 degrees and walk 22 steps to a large rock structure, which has a cave-like appearance. Your prize will be on the northeast side in a stone lean-to. You may want to bring a flashlight. Go back the way you came to get back to your car.
