The Gavin Trail, Hunter’s Run

Directions:
Take Nod Rd. from Rt. 44 in Avon, past the main entrance to Hunter’s Run. Take a right onto Nod Way and park near the wood bridge.

Clues: (Helmet replaced 3/28/07)

Cross the bridge and follow the trail to the wide grassy area. Wear long pants, socks and sturdy shoes because of poison ivy in the grassy area.
Climb up hill to some large stones on the left. Take the white blazed trail to the right after passing one yellow blaze. Pass a bench . Stop at the large root end of an uprooted tree. Look to the left for an oak tree with what appears to be a log standing in its base. Behind this tree you should find The Belt. Return to the trail and continue on. Pass an interesting large rock on the left. Wind around and cross a ravine. At a two-brother tree with a rock in front of it, look left to some stumps. Examine the stump beyond the hollow log for The Breastplate.

Continue on white across another ravine. You won’t get lost on this trail. The blazes are plentiful! Come to a junction with blue going slightly to the right and white making a turn uphill to the left. Take blue to a large boulder on the left. Look behind and at the base of cedars for The Shoes. Return to the white trail and at the last blue blaze turn right up the hill on white. Notice the ancient grape vines on the right. You will follow the trail around brush and past some very large downed trees. Find your way around the one across the path. (I went left.) A yellow arrow on a tree points the same way you are going on white. Come to some birches on the right and a crooked one on the left. Look beyond the crooked birch to a large oak at 20 degrees. Go to the oak and examine the V of rotting logs near the base for The Shield.

Back on white, the blue trail joins on the right at the Avon Land Trust sign. Stay on white. Low bridge ahead, lots of rocks, probably a wet area. Continue, now descending a long downhill to a double stump on the right with nearby boulders and downed trees. From the double stump, take 21 paces down to trail to a mossy rock on the right. There is another rock a few paces ahead, also. At the first rock look about 10*, behind a tree, to another large rock mound. Go there and check the NE corner for the helmet. Please reconceal carefully leaving it looking as natural as possible.

Continuing on, soon you will see large brownish rocks ahead. Go to the yellow blaze and turn right following yellow up hill past mother/daughter boulders. Find the next boulder beyond. Look behind for The Sword. Return back down the yellow trail to the obvious trail that leads to your car.

Please reseal all boxes and re-conceal carefully and completely.
