Sept 5, 2005 -I just got an e-mail about the park. It seems that the turtle pond is roped off for some sort of project. The intrepid boxer worked around on another trail to get to the field with final compass readings. Alas, it was found! Off the top of my head I think you go down the east trail from the parking lot (like the clues). Cross the wooden foot bridge. Instead of taking a right on the Red trail, go straight. wind around a bit east then start heading south. A trail comes in from the east (left) do not tske it, go straight. You will then stumble upon the field with the bench in it.

Alive and well as of May 16, 2005!

Woodland Park

Terrain: Flat easy, but can be a little wet, some rocks
Time: about 10 minutes to box

Woodland Park and Nature preserve is on Middlesex Road in Darien, CT
between exits 9 and 10 of I-95.

From the South (Northbound on I-95) If you take exit 9 take left, then left again over through way. (The WWE exit)
Follow the signs for route 106. CT-106 turns from Courtland Ave into
Glenbrook Road (right) Where Glenbrook Road ends, Middlesex Road
begins. Woodland Park is about 1/2 mile down Middlesex Road.

From the north get off exit 10. Go left and follow to light. Take right onto Noroton Ave. Go straight through second light (West Ave.) and proceed to stop sign on Middlesex Road. Take a left. After third road on left you should be able to see park on left.

Park at the Middlesex Road entrance. There is a sign with a map at
the entrance. Sometimes there are maps you can take there, if not the
sign shows that the white trail begins to the left of the sign (facing
the sign) from the left side of the parking area. Follow the white
trail. It will curve to the right. After passing a log cut in the
middle to allow the path through, there is a small trail to the right
forming a Y.

You will see a bridge ahead (toward the left). Go over this bridge. Immediately after the bridge is the entrance to the red trail (blazed) to the right. Follow the red
trail. You will pass a stump in the middle of the trail, through
remnants of three stone walls, and finally to a small pond with a
bench above it. Looks like a nice place to find turtles when there is
water (I’m assuming since that is the pond’s name).

Sit at the bench, take a look around, and relax. The pond is ahead,
wood steps are to your left, and the blue trail starts to your right
and there is also a large stone wall to your right. Head up this trail with the rock wall to the right.

You will come upon the upland field. To your right is a break in the wall where the white trail comes through. From this gap walk 10 steps down the trail (meaning, go over to the gap and turn around and face north, then take 10 steps). From this spot it is:

120 degrees to a spot in between the four signs indicating trees, they are on the far side of the field.

40 degrees to the Bench on the trail.

160 degrees to the Red Maple sign

195 degrees to the white marker on the tree

170 degrees to the letterbox that is hidden in the top of the rock wall.

There is a tree just in front of the wall, the box is just to the right.

Stamp is carved

Stamp in (use the bench?) and replace.

I am placing this in November, if this box needs to seriously move when everything is green again, please contact me. Heck, contact me just to update me.

PS No hunting is allowed and all dogs must be on a leash.
