Little Boxes on a Hillside

Hoadley Creek/Pinchot Preserve
Branford, CT

A clue written in the style of one of our favorite clue-writers, RTRW

Details you don’t necessarily need to know:
This stamp was carved by RTRW, who was giving her carvings away one recent Sunday afternoon. When I saw the stamp, it reminded me of scenes of Mediterranean harbors, where angular houses are built up on the steep hillsides above the sea, catching the sun.
This in turn brought to mind a song by Malvina Reynolds (which has nothing to do the afore-mentioned Mediterranean scene – it’s just the way my train of thought runs)
named “Little Boxes on a Hillside”.
While we were out planting another box we came upon a hillside with little boxes, and knew it was just the spot to plant this RTRW stamp

Details you do need to know:
This box is a Tag-a-long to the NeeDeeps’ Wisconsin State Stamp, so definitely bring those clues along! After stamping in Wisconsin,
Continue on the red acorn trail until you come to a “Y” at another large erratic. This rock has a 2 sister tree right in front of it with two red acorns on it indicating that the trail turns right. You will take the unmarked trail to the left bearing 330º a short distance to where it passes a stone wall and enters a field. Here you will see little boxes on a hillside. Take 7 steps along the wall, stop, turn right and face it. Notice three larger stones on the top of the wall. Beneath the center one you will find more Little Boxes on a Hillside. You need only remove one fist-sized stone (which we placed at the opening of this hole) to reach in and get the box.

Go back out to the red trail and continue following it to where it rejoins the white trail. Head back south now along the creek between mossy ledges. (This section of trail can have damp spots)

Shortly before you reach the parking area, you can take a side trip up the red square trail on your left to an overlook high above the RR tracks which has a wonderful view of Stony Creek and several of the Thimble Islands. The trail actually goes down the bank along the RR tracks and back to the parking area. Or you can backtrack the way you went up – it is not far.
