Placement date:
State: Oregon
County: Jefferson
Nearest city: Terrebonne
Number of boxes: 1
Comment from Talking Dog (comment made at AQ) 04/12/2014:
We believe the box is no longer. There has apparently been a bunch of clean up and there are brush piles, downed Junipers, and it looked like maybe it was to be a burn pile. There is no discerning which Juniper it could have been, and there are piles upon piles so looking at potential Junipers was impossible. Bummer. We looked forward to it.
Unfortunately, birder passed away in May of 2015. I have assumed ownership of all his boxes and the clues listed at AtlasQuest and LBNA. I will appreciate help maintaining the boxes and receiving detailed remarks about the condition of the boxes so I can keep the clues up to date. Contact me (Calli-K) via either AQ or LBNA.
Gray Butte is located on the Crooked River Grasslands northeast of Terrebonne. It is a mostly dry juniper-sage area so where there is water birds tend to gather. These boxes are located near water troughs. The first area is used by cattle, so the area is pretty trampled at some times of the year, but the birds come to the water anyway. There are are also some interesting rock formations in the area. More boxes may be added to this series in the future.
To get there: Turn east on B street in Terrebonne. Stay on that road until you come to a T. At the T turn left. Soon after you cross the Jefferson County line look for the Skull Hollow campground sign. Turn left on the dirt road. Ignore any roads to the left. At Road 57 take a left. When you come to several large Poplar trees, go straight down the hill and park by the water troughs.
