BUSY BUSY BEAVER

There is so much beaver activity in Walden Preserve that it was hard to find a perfect place. But as luck would have it, the perfect place picked the beaver. Once you arrive at Walden Preserve on Hagen Road in Salem, look at the map board. A new trail called the Knife Edge Trail is easy to locate It is the Orange Trail. . Turtle Pond is shown on the map board and that is your destination. Take the Red Main Trail into the Preserve and when you get close to #5 Turtle Pond watch for a short orange painted pipe on the right side of the trail ~, take a sharp right off the main trail and follow the Orange Trail down. . This is a loop trail that comes back out onto the Red Main trail. As you go down a short steep hill and jump over a small brook, you will know that you are on the proper end of the orange loop..
Now the best part – Beaver work everywhere and you hike up and down and all around short little hills with twisty vines that give an enchanted feel to the trail. Soon you are up on a small ridge with a river on your right . When the orange trail splits, a yellow arrow shows that one way is the High way and the other the Low way, The orange trails meet again soon. At this yellow arrow, take the Low way - the left way, and notice a large pine tree on the left . The Beaver has not found it yet, so quick, site 110 degrees behind the pine to a large sitting rock Go there and notice a beaver was at work and he now hides under the large rock. Carefully remove the small rocks and please cover the box well again. The Beaver may try to take the box home . ! Continue on the orange trail and soon see that the High road joins and again there are yellow arrows. This part of the Knife Edge Trail gets better and better. Water , water, on both sides as you travel a dyke. Sleeping Ferns are everywhere, a promise of a lovely glen in summer. Beaver activity makes you smile. How do they know what to do ?? As you come to the end of the orange trail and meet the main Red trail, turn left to your car, however turn right and find there are many more boxes to hunt.!
Enjoy your Hunt !
