Once, when on this hike, we were close to the spot where this box is hidden. It is nowhere near any houses, cars or parking lots. Yet we heard the distinct beep-beep sound of a car alarm being set. Baffled, we looked all around and to our surprise we spotted a raven making this sound perfectly.
Directions
The small town of Terrebonne is located between Redmond and Madras on Highway 97. There are signs here to direct you east to Smith Rock State Park entrance. You will find vending machines where you can purchase your day use pass. Water and good hiking shoes are essential. Trail maps are available at the pay station. Allow 2-3 hours for this hike.
Clue
Work your way up to the ridge where misery is your companion. When you see a grim black cone to the west, tuff luck due south, prickly branches to the north and myriad rows to hoe to the east, you will be given the choice between parking and pictures. Take neither. Drag yourself down the rocky path at 155 degrees. When you see two twisted skeletons standing beside you, about fifty-five more steps will take you to the letterbox. Look beneath gnarled, dead wood on the sinister side.
