Difficulty: Easy (with some stair type climbing)
Distance to Letterbox: 100 yards (but can complete loop going .5 miles and get Silver Eagle's box.
Status of Letterbox: Reported missing 10 1/8/09, but not confirmed.
The "Missing Bones" letterbox is located in Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge. This is the largest city owned Nature Center in the USA! The park offers 25 miles of hiking trails, canoeing on the Trinity River, wildlife, wildflowers, picnicing, and much more. The park is open form 9am to 5pm daily, and charges a fee.
Directions:
From Loop I-820, take Hwy 199 west 4 miles. Exit Confederate Park Rd. Stay on the service road. Turn right at stop sign. Take Buffalo Road to Fossil Ridge Rd. Turn right onto Fossil Ridge Rd. Drive up the hill to the parking area.
To the Letterbox:
Walk up the path to the Hardwicke Interpretive Center. Get a map, and enjoy the exhibits. Go the the back of the center, and go left at the Caprock Trail start sign. Follow this trail along the rim and enjoy the view. At the top of the cliff, there is a bench and a scenic overlook point. From here, continue to follow the trail, which is gravel and crossties, as it begins to go gradually downhill. When you pass the two signs that say "Earth healing", the trail begins to descend more steeply with crosstie steps which become rock steps. Count 8 rock steps down the trail form the last crosstie step. Immediately to your left, look for a dead, gnarly tree trunk about 8 to 9 ' tall, small in diameter. At the base of this tree, behind a large white limestone shell rick, concealed with several smaller white rocks, is the Missing Bones letterbox. Please re-cover it well so it can not be seen from the trail. Now continue down the Caprock trail to find Silver Eagle's box.
