April 12, 2007 Update: This series is almost two and half years old, and the Loon and Owl have been confirmed missing. The Chickadee moved to a new location in October of 2005 (see new clues below), and is alive & well as of April 2007. I may replace the other boxes at some point, but not in the near future.

Directions

This series is hidden in Crestwoods Park, which is located in Kirkland, WA. You can reach the park by taking 19th Avenue east from Market street to its terminus. Restroom facilities are usually available and leashed dogs are welcomed. Total boxing time is about 1 hour. The trails can be a bit muddy in places, especially after heavy rains. A compass is helpful; all readings are magnetic. Bring your binoculars, and look for chickadees, wrens, woodpeckers, and sparrows.

Clue

Park in the lot near the corner of 6th Street and 18th Avenue. Start near this street corner and follow the dirt trail at 50*. Just before the top of the stairs, take the first trail off to the left. Follow this trail along, and you will come to a large fallen log that used to block the path. Past this log a couple dozen steps is a large maple on the right.

Continue forward on the trail, and you will soon cross a small stream on a makeshift bridge. An active railroad track appears on your right. You will walk for a ways, first down then up then down again. Coming down a gentle hill, you will come to a major intersection with a trail leading right at 15* and a trail leading left at 270*.

Follow the trail at 270*. If you have a deck of cards handy, take one step for each card in the deck. (If you don't have one handy, well then just pretend!) At this point off to your left some 15 yards is a 6-foot stump covered in ivy. There is a hole on the left side, about halfway up. Just inside this hole, and covered by a large piece of bark, you will find the Chickadee's new home. Be sure to cover him back up carefully, otherwise he is plainly visible from the trail! And poor Chickadee is tired of being roughed up!

If you continue on up the main trail you will complete the loop in short order.

I hope you enjoy the walk, the park, and my hand-carved stamp.
