Newnan, the seat of Coweta County, has long been known as the "City of Homes" because of its bevy of historical homes dating back to the Civil War.

Several of the antebellum homes, the Coweta County Courthouse and area churches were spared in the War Between the States and many were used as sites to treat wounded Union and Confederate troops during the Battle of Brown's Mill in 1864.

Today, Newnan has six historic districts recognized by the National Register of Historic Places including and surrounding parts of downtown Newnan.

The city was established in 1828, starting out as the settlement of Bullsboro. It was named in honor of Gen. Daniel Newnan, a former Secretary of State and U.S. Congressman. After a spate of annexations in the 1990s, the city now covers close to 19 square miles.
