Fairy Pool

Location: Meshomasic State Forest, Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut
The box is in East Hampton, but it is only accessible through Glastonbury.

Planted: 3/30/2002 by John
Adopted: 8/18/2003 by the Bird Stamper
Replanted: 8/25/2003 in a new location, same stamp
Pace: Two steps, i.e. count left foot only.

Difficulty: No trail to follow. Not a long trip, but rocky and moss covered rocks which are slippery when wet. The leaf covered spaces between the rocks hide sink holes.

Highlights: In the summer, absolutely incredible amounts of moss. Stunning colors of green. Really neat glacial till that is exposed from the stream run-off. It looks like a boulder garden.

Directions:
From the Hartford area, take exit 10 off of Route 2 and take a right onto Route 83 (Manchester Rd.). Go 0.1 mile to a stop sign.

Coming from the Marlborough area take exit 10 off Route 2 and take a left onto Route 83 (Manchester Rd.). Go about 0.2 miles to a stop sign.

Take a left onto New London Turnpike, which will turn into Wassauc Road. Go 0.6 mile to your first stop sign. At the stop sign you're at the corner of Wassauc Road and Country Club Road. Take a right onto Country Club Road. Drive down, then up Country Club Road 0.5 mile to an obviously dangerous intersection. Take Mott Hill Road on the left. Be EXTREMELY careful at this crossing. It is blind both ways and people fly down the road from the country club.

On Mott Hill Road, drive 0.9 mile and you'll come to a fork. There will be a sign that says Dickinson road is a dead end to the left. Bear right. The road turns to dirt in 0.1 mile. You'll be on Del Reeves Road. Drive 1.0 mile and you'll pass a large boulder on the left, just before you come to the Fairy Pool. Park just past the culvert, on the left.

The clues:
Go to the Fairy pool next to the culvert. The day the box was planted it was about 2 to 3 feet deep and an aquamarine blue. The heavy rains make the area magical. This culvert area is the Fairy Pool. I couldn't hide the box here ... too easy and you'd miss the beauty of the brook. To earn the blessings of the fairies, add a rock to the dam that makes the pool. The fairies have trouble moving the larger rocks.

Go back up the road to the large boulder you passed on the way in. Cross the road to the north (left) side. Take a bearing of 30 degrees and walk 17 paces to a large Oak tree. Take a bearing of 38 degrees and walk 15 paces to a Hemlock tree. This tree is being attacked by the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid and will soon die. Most Hemlocks in Connecticut are afflicted also. Take a bearing of 320 degrees and walk 10 paces to mount a rock. It is next to a fallen tree, about 50 feet long. Enjoy the view of the green vale with all the trees, moss, and ferns. Take a bearing of 42 degrees to a large, flat rock. It is just to the east (right) of the north-east (right) end of the fallen tree. Check under the north-west corner of the rock for your prize.

Take time to enjoy the various pools, trees growing on rocks, moss, and landscape. Today it was amazing. All the rain made this area energetic and stunning. In the spring or fall, look for the yellow birch that is growing in the middle of the stream on a rock. Look for a washing machine sized rock that has a waffle-pattern of quartz on its Eastern face. These aren't landmarks, more just FYI's. Explore in the area if the water levels will let you. Be careful of the holes under the leaves between the rocks. After exploring, head south and you will return to the road.

I hope you enjoyed this trip to a magical fairy land.
