Great Pond State Forest
1.5 miles/Easy

As of January 07' the 1st box is missing (Beaver) but the 2nd and 3rd were still there. We also accidentally stumbled on a GeoCache box at the site of the 3rd box (Raccoon) so be careful not to get the two confused.

I have adopted these boxes so that the boxes would not fall off of the website. If you are the original planter, please e-mail me and I will have them signed over to you.

Great Pond State Forest is a 280 acre preserve left to the state by forester and conservationist James L. Goodwin. At the center of the forest is shallow Great Pond. It attracts a wide variety of wildlife including over 100 species of nesting birds. Mountain laurel and tall stands of rhododendron can be found along the trail that circles the pond and waterlillies bloom through the summer.

Take route 10/202 in Simsbury to CT167 South. Go 0.2 miles to Firetown Rd. Take right and go 0.7 miles to a fork and bear left onto Great Pond Rd. The park entrance is 1.6 miles ahead on the right. Go up the dirt entrance road to the parking lot at the end. Here your search will begin!

Go around Great Pond
With your eyes opened wide
To seek forest friends
In the places they hide.

Three boxes are there
Each safe in a spot
Be careful, be sharp
You'll find them...or not!

Begin where you've parked
Trail's at seventy degrees
Walk toward the pond
On a path through the trees.

Ahead lies a marker
Our thanks etched in stone
Because of James Goodwin
This place we all own.

Backwards in time
Around the pond you will go
By the time you are done
Three furry friends you will know.

Look for a home
On the side of the trail
Where the first once lived
She of broad tail.

Onward you go
Along on your stroll
To a place where a goat
Might meet with a troll.

Not over but under
Tucked safe in a nook
First corner you reach
Here you must look.

The side is away
From the lodge you did find
You'll spy her new home
If you keep this in mind.

You've met the first friend
A beaver you see
But its time to move on
After all there are three!

Along the straight dike
Leaning trees you will see
Trail turns sinister now
The direction is key.

Continue along
Northeast if you please
To the place of June blooms
Amongst the tall trees.

There at a T
Left you must travel
Very soon you will have
A clue to unravel.

For up just ahead
To the side that is might
A small sunny sign
Lies in plain sight.

Just East of this spot
In hollow of tree
Sits Old Mister Bear
You've found two of three!

No time to waste here
Along you must go
And one more to find
He's tricky you know!

The path wanders on
Through laurel and fern
Kids climb a large rock
As you twist and you turn.

Ahead lie two bridges
The second with rail
Cross them you must
Or surely you'll fail.

Come to the crossroad
Trails to confuse
The path that goes left
Is the one you should choose.

With pond off to port
You'll come to a rise
Side trail to the left
At the end is your prize.

The bench sits up high
Above Great Pond's shore
A racoon on the left
Several paces....no more.

Horns shaped of wood
Lie there on the ground
Beneath it you'll see
A masked friend can be found.

On back to the trail
Its not very far
Just 10 minutes more
And you're back to your car.

You've found them all now
Furry friends on a hike
Come back again soon
That they would like.

For Great Pond is here
To enjoy while we can
Coon, Beaver and Bear
Child, Woman and Man!
