04-07-14 Looks like the box is MIA. If anyone is planning on going to Hawaii and hike the Kalalau Trail, please let us know. We’ll re-carve and send you the box.

5-23-12 - We've had reports that the box is missing. Guess we'll have to go back and check. The things we do for letterboxing ;)
This box is back thanks to the efforts of Fish Outta Water, who carried a replacement box to this location and replanted it for us. Thanks, Fish!

Difficulty: Strenous, but not bad if you take it slow.

Distance/time: Only about a half mile or so roundtrip; total time depends on your fitness level, but most folks can do it in an hour.

This box was planted on the beautiful Kalalau Trail, which begins near Kee Beach on the northermost part of Kauai. Find the trailhead near the covered shelter, which is adjacent to the parking lot. Go up, up, up - it's very rocky and steep so take water, trekking poles, and wear sturdy shoes. In the first ¼ mile you will pass a wet area at a 180* switchback. With the elevation increase you can see Ke’e Beach and past the reef. This part of the trail is made of large stone, many of which are eroded, making the hike difficult – a walking stick is a necessary piece of equipment to have on this hike! The rains of late 2008 have really washed away the soil, leaving an extensive array of exposed roots and rock. Continue along the trail, passing random logs for steps until you find 5 logs equally spaced. Even with the last log on the makai (to the sea) side, there is a mango tree. To the left of the mango tree are 2 lahalas and then to the left of the lahalas, a “plum”. This is the tree at whose base hides the box.

Drop us a line a girlguides@verizon.net and let us know if you survived the trek and how the box is doing!
