Take Floodwood Road (also sometimes called Hoel Pond Road) off of Route 30 South between Lake Clear and Upper Saranac Lake. Drive West about 6 miles until you cross a set of train-tracks, and then look for a turn-off 500 yards further along on your left. Go to the parking lot and find a spot. Walk along the shore in a South-Westerly direction until you reach a spot with an 8-stemmed birch tree near a huge leaning white pine (both are within 15 feet of the water). Imagine a line between the birch and the pine, and plant yourself midway between them; look for the letterbox near a stump a few feet North-Easterly from your imagined line.
