****8/06****Glad to report that according to a recent finder "Elvis has not left the building!" They took the tour and after the tour asked if they could take a couple of photos of their family by the stage. Enjoy!
In April 1948, Shreveport radio station KWKH began a weekly show called the “Louisiana Hayride.” This radio show was broadcast from the stage of the Municipal Auditorium. The auditorium became known throughout the nation as “the cradle of the stars.” It launched the careers of many greats like Elvis Presley. In fact, Elvis spent every Saturday night at the Hayride for the first 18 months of his career!
Other personalities that graced the Hayride stage were Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and George Jones. The stage also welcomed Sergei Rachmaninoff, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bette Davis, Nat King Cole, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan, James Brown and even the Rolling Stones! In fact, my high school graduation was held here in 1985!
The Municipal Auditorium was built in 1929 and dedicated to the “Veterans of the World War” [I]. The site is well noted for its superior acoustics. It has recently undergone some restoration to include a small museum and roof and structural upgrades. Although a bit daunting from the outside this is an impressive interior! It is located on Elvis Presley Boulevard in downtown Shreveport and guaranteed to be open on Saturdays between 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Call (318) 673-5100 for tour information.
Clues: Enter the building and find the hallway that leads down the right side of the auditorium. Stay on the main floor and locate seat A-8. Imagine how thrilling it was to see such great, young performers begin their careers right on the stage beside you! Look over your right shoulder and exit that direction. Take a look backstage. Find room 250 and see where the young stars saw their faces in the lights before going out on stage. Close the door and do your best Elvis impersonation! Find a way to reach up on the shelf high above the second mirror…journey back to the Auditorium to stamp in. Bring your own ink – Elvis looks great in black…of course!
