The green jay is strikingly colored, with bright green body and tail with yellow on the sides, a brilliant blue crown and cheek, with the rest of head, throat, and breast black. It can be found in dry thickets and open forest with thick undergrowth in southernmost Texas (Rio Grande Valley) southward. One place it can be found, along with this microbox, is Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, which also contains the headquarters of the World Birding Center. It is part of the Los Ebanos Loop described on the Lower Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail map. Birders across the nation know Bentsen as a treasure trove of Valley specialties – those birds found nowhere else in the United States. There is no driving in the park, so you will have to walk, rent a bike, or take the Tram that stops at various places in the park. We rented a 4-seater bike for only $10 and really enjoyed it.
Directions:
From Mission, take Hwy 83 west to Bentsen Palm Drive, then travel South to the World Birding Center Headquarters at Bentsen State Park. Park across the street to the left of the center, then go pay fee and get map.
Clues:
Go to the Kingfisher Overlook, which is about .5 mile from entrance on the right. Find the Green Jay trail to the left of the overlook and walk about 50 yards on it, going past a picnic pavilion on the left, until you come to a small asphalt trail coming in from the left. Look to the right (north) and find a large, bent tree in front of a wood pole about 10 steps off the trail. The microbox in camo tape is in a hollow on the back side about 4 feet off the ground, covered in sticks and leaves. Please re-cover well.
