The west Texas town of Lubbock is surrounded by mile
upon mile of flat prairie land now planted in cotton. A beloved native son is the rockabilly musician, Buddy Holly. Numerous musicians who rose to fame after his untimely death pay homage to him at the Buddy Holly Center. Be sure to visit this small museum where you can see Buddy's Cub Scout uniform, his Fender Stratocaster and the trademark black spectacles found at the scene of the airplane crash which ended his 18 month career.

NOTE: Reported missing

To the trailhead: From the Buddy Holly Center go west on 19th to University
and turn right. Just past the 289 Loop overpass on University turn left and
go to Lubbock Lake Landmark. Park at the Interpretive Center. This is a
terrific place to learn about the fossils, geology and ancient peoples of
this area.

To the letterbox: Get a trail map and head for the dirt Nature Trail. Close
to one one of the overlooks along the loop marked with yellow-topped posts,
you will find an abandoned foundation. Along its eastern wall, the
letterbox waits beneath a rock. (Allow an hour just for the letterbox)
