At long last, there's a real live panther in the Jungle!
This letterbox is located on the campus of the original college for rocket scientists! Florida Tech was founded back at the beginning of the Space Race to provide fresh... well, rocket scientists... for the new Space Administration.
The Botanical Gardens have undergone some major transformations since I was a student, but they're all for the better. I do wish I could have picked a better hiding place in The Jungle, but there is still a LOT of cleanup from two hurricanes to do! I had to choose a spot that had already been restored.
PLEASE BE VERY INCONSPICUOUS! This is a very busy campus! Bring a camera and anything else that would allow you to have an excuse to linger in this area.
Directions
Go to the Florida Institute of Technology campus. Park in the Visitor's spaces near the Adminstration buildings on Country Club Rd. Park in front of the Jerome P. Keuper building. Get out of your car and head NE to the plaza between the JPK building and the Homer R. Denius Student Center.
Clue
From the black panther statue in the plaza, head toward the NW corner of the Student Center. You'll see a slightly twisted wooden bridge heading through the Jungle, and, to its right, a concrete path. Take the concrete path down into the Jungle.
After crossing the first concrete bridge, turn right. Follow the path to a cobblestone plaza. Take a few minutes to look around and enjoy the scenery (this wasn't here 10 years ago!). Exit the plaza via the path at about 130°.
Cross two concrete bridges, then turn left at the security phone. You'll come to a fork in the path that's actually a loop. Go around to the back of the loop. You'll see an unpaved path heading off the loop at about 90°. To the left of the path is a lone palm tree. Behind that palm is a bamboo tree.
The panther lives in the heart of the bamboo tree. He is surrounded by palm stalks and covered by debris.
Please be very discrete and rehide the box especially well!
