Your search for this letterbox will take you to Backbone State Park. Backbone is Iowa's first state park. Backbone State Park is the "Yellowstone" of Iowa, located north of Manchester about 10 miles, just off Iowa Highway 13.

The park's most outstanding feature is its spinelike rock formation that is known by the locals as the devil's backbone. Legend has it that the devil lost his nerve one day and left his backbone behind.

Rating: Easy

Clues:

The first parking lot on your right, as you enter through the East gate is where you need to be.

From the sign announcing the devil's spine travel 10 degrees to the distant tall pine, following the black ribbon that winds through the park. Bypassing the house of comfort on your right.

From the pine, descend the nearly hidden earthen steps to the trail that leads to the valley below (the worn path will do just as well).

From the worn pathway turn right. Count 125 steps to the letterbox. Its behind a tree under the base of an up-rooted stump.

After recording your find, take time and explore this wonderful park. I am sure you will want to come back again and again.
