For those who have found our Letterbox in the past, it is now in a new location, a nice excuse for revisiting this excellent wildlife resource.

Ithaca is a unique, small city in central New York (Tompkins County). It is located on Cayuga Lake, one of the Finger Lakes formed thousands of years ago by huge glaciers which left behind spectacular gorges. Ithaca is home to 29,000 residents and nearly as many college students.

The clues to this box location are moderately easy, though a walk through the woods on maintained trails is required.

SAPSUCKER WOODS…
home of the Laboratory of Ornithology and a favorite spot for birders and nature walkers. Be sure to plan time to visit the facility and hike the surrounding trails. Bring your binoculars for birding! Several comments in our previous cache in this area noted it is an excellent location for seeing frogs as well.

Here you will find 4.2 miles of winding trails, and while you may not see a Yellow-bellied sapsucker, you are sure to enjoy the peaceful woods. Dogs are not allowed.

GETTING TO SAPSUCKER WOODS:

Coming from the West by one of three route numbers (79, 89 or 96), go down a hill into Ithaca, and turn left onto Route 13 North. If you are coming from the East by Route 79, go down the hill, and in Ithaca, turn right onto Route 13 North.

Travel North past the Cayuga Heights Exit and the Pyramid Mall Exit, and proceed to the first stoplight where you will turn right onto Warren Road. After about one mile you will come to a four-way stop. Turn left onto Hanshaw Road, and travel eight tenths of a mile to Sapsucker Woods Road where you turn left.

Drive half a mile on this road to a small parking area on the right.
Leave your car here, do not cross the road, and enter the woods on the East side.

SPECIFIC CLUES:

Enter the hiking area through the gate, consult the map for the path layout in that area. Turning left at the map and crossing the extensive boardwalk is a good choice for seeing the area. At the end of the board walk, there is another map. Turn right, go about 70 paces and look carefully. The location is near the trail and after you have found it, please replace it carefully so that it is not immediately visible from the path.

When leaving, continue around the loop trail to the road in order to see all that this site offers.

Additional hints: It's on the right side and accessible to all ages. In deep snow it will take a little digging to find.
