Manini Beach Park, BIG ISLAND, Hawaii -short walk from park

South of Captain Cook off of Hwy 11 you will find a twisty paved road to the old Napo’opo’o wharf where many folks launch their kayaks. You can park here, swim and snorkle, visit the nearby heiau, paddle to the Captain Cook monument and walk to Manini Beach, about 5 minutes by foot. If you walk out on the wharf and look southwest across the bay you will see a long line of palms and a pebble beach. It is a pleasant place to swim and snorkle on a calm day. If you don’t want to walk over drive south on the very narrow paved road, turn right on leaving the wharf and take the first right, the road gets narrower. There is a very small parking lot beside the entrance to Manini Beach. There is no obvious sign. You will find the entrance to the park beside a large 2 story blue-green house (82-6291?).
Walk through the park (you may see the local donkey), and pass through the green gate.
Go to the south end of the park and passed through the second green gate to follow a narrow mulch & lava gravel path headed in a southern direction. When the path comes out at the ocean, turn left and head toward the land's end. There will be a sign noting that the area is a marine reserve. Facing the sign, look to the right (south) and spot the taller of several trees (approximately 35 steps to reach it). There is a very small wall of lava rocks in front of the tree. Buried in lava rocks on the north side of the tree you will find the two travellers. Look around before retrieving as this is a popular spot. Walk away to stamp in and return the box only when there is no one watching! Mahalo for being extra sneaky ;-)
