May '07 We've gotten several reports that this one is missing. We'll try to check it our and get an update up soon.

Distance - Maybe ½ a mile in and out
Time - 30 minutes
Difficulty - Easy. The only tough part is knowing which trees we mean

Brodie Park is located on the corner of West Hill and Niles Road. On the lake side, there are 50 acres which can be used for soccer, picnicking, swimming, boating and other
outdoor activities; across the road there are an additional 150 acres on which you can hike on the trail set up by the Conservation Commission, horseback ride, or take a
leisurely stroll.

From Route 44 In New Hartford turn south onto route 219. Travel approximately .8 miles and turn right onto West Hill Road for about 2.4 miles. You will start seeing brown signs for Brodie Park. West Hill makes some crazy turns, so keep looking for road sign posts. Just as a heads up, after you see Turnbull Street on your right, West Hill makes a sharpish left veer. If you go straight you’d be on Burwell. This is not where you want to be. Turn right on Niles Road. Brodie Park is .1 mile on your left. There is another entrance to the park on West Hill, but these clues will work better from the Niles side of the park.

Once you turn into the park drive straight past the lovely meadow sprinkled with trees to a parking area on your right. Don’t fork left at the entrance past the painted window cottage. Jump out of your car. Stretch your legs.

From the parking area, turn right toward the waterfront. Walk .2 miles. Please don’t walk faster than 5 miles per hour out of respect for the sign. This is a New Hartford town beach, and if you have the appropriate sticker you may drive down and park.

You will come to a green and white cottage by the white fence on your right. Please look at it. From the rock, left of the cottage door, head up the little trail to the east. Go 82 grown up steps (whatever that means). Look to the left for two large deciduous (leafy or not, depending on the season) trees, with a rear flank of a not too healthy hemlock. Your treasure is lying beneath some oldish logs to the right of the front tree.

The idea for the stamp was taken from the town logo. Apparently, one of the local churches had had a bit of bad luck. In April, 1975 the New Hartford Jaycees organized a contest for all New Hartford school children to design a town emblem for the
bicentennial. Seven year old James Thorsell won with his sketch of the "church that
stabbed itself." The church was once located on Town Hill Road. Jimmy received a $50 savings bond. Have Fun
