December 19, 2008 - Currently the boxes that were listed as "abandoned" under WD'A have been placed under me. Capperpillar and I have pulled some of the abandoned boxes (that were still alive) and are hoping that WD'A will come to the Gathering in January so we can help her update and re-plant her boxes. Until that time we cannot guarantee that any of her boxes are currently alive and/or what condition they are in. More details to come.

Amaryllis all winter
*This is 1/5 in a Botanical Traditions theme. Each stands alone and because they are placed far apart do not fit the series criteria.

Exit I-184 East via exit 49 toward City Center.
Take the Curtis Road exit toward Garden City.
Turn Left onto North Curtis Rd.
Turn West (left) on Fairview Av., and continue 3 miles, and through the Five Mile intersection on Fairview.
Stay in the right hand lane. Look for the Botanical Center (business) on the right not much west of Fivemile. If you get to Cloverdale, you have gone to far.

The directions are straightforward but the name of the business is just a tiny bit cryptic, all that you need to know is in the message.
When you have found the place, park in front. Business hours are 9a-6p M-Sa. And 12n-5p on Sunday (summer hours may vary) but they are open year round and their stock changes seasonally.

Once in the door go to the North East corner where the seeds are, buy a packet or too if you are so inclined. You will find the 1.5x1.5 LbNA emblem above eye level to most every one. Take the emblem off the peg and present it to the retail clerk she will give you the box. Feel free to take it to your car for stamping and return the box to the clerk and the tag to its peg.
Management is agreeable to this hobby but if per chance you get a new employee who doesn’t seem to know what is going on, the box is on the counter, you will still need to find the emblem.
Amaryllises All Winter
Amaryllises bloom year after year, thriving best when the roots crowd the pots. They are large in size and require pots 2 to 4 inches wider than the bulbs. Their blossoms appear in about two to four weeks. Planted from October to March they bloom from December to April. When flowers fade, cut the stems to 2 inches and set the pot in bright sunlight. Do not remove leaves until they wither. Store dry bulbs in a cool dry place until time to force flowers again in Oct. or leave them in the pots and put them out in the spring. They will bloom again in July (but not at Christmas). Fertilize with bone meal during the growing season.
Consider planting an odd number in a long shallow pot with bulbs spaced 2 inches apart. Place several pots in the window for a row of scarlet color. Surround the pots with tinsel or evergreen garland for a festive appearance.
