Description

The 'Red Sand Beach' Letterbox is located on the south side of 386 ' high Ka'uiki Hill on the opposite side of the hill from its sister 'Red Sand Pocket Beach - Hana' Letterbox.

For more information on 'Heavenly' Hana, please refer to the description associated with Playmaker's 'Red Sand Pocket Beach - Hana' Letterbox.

The Red Sand Beach is a hidden gem very close to Hana. The beach itself is made up of the same crumbling red and black cinders that make up the Ka'uiki Hill.

Swimming is usually reasonable except in rough seas. There is a strip of jagged lava that cuts across out from the shore that forms a semi-pool at the head of the beach that offers some protection in calmer seas. Snorkeling is poor. But the beach and surroundings are a sight to behold.

The trail is on the side of a hill and requires caution on the loose cinders making footing awkward in several areas. Reasonable shoes are certainly preferable. There are a couple of signs, one saying 'No Trespassing' and another saying 'Use at your own risk'. One also says there is no trail, which is untrue. There is indeed a well used trail. Most people simply ignore the signs. Don't hike if the trail is muddy and be careful on the cinders.

The hike along the trail will take between 5 and 10 minutes.

The beach is striking and the setting is magnificent. The rainbow of colors in the lava cinders along the way, the electric blue waters outside the cove, the menacing-looking lava rock inside the bay, the ironwood trees, the layered cinder walls and the untouched beauty make Red Sand Beach a memorable place to visit.

Since this beach is quite private, bathing suits are optional and there are always numerous sunbathers on the beach.

Once you arrive in Hana on Highway 360, watch for Hauoli Street on your left. Turn left and go a short distance to Uakea Road.

On your right, Uakea Road has a sign that says 'Dead End'. There is very limited parking on the 'Dead End' section of Uakea Road, so you should park before turning onto Uakea Road. At the end of Uakea Road there are some buildings owned by the Hotel Hana-Maui.

The 'Red Sand Beach' Letterbox is located on the trail to Red Sand Beach.

Clues

Once you are parked head down Uakea Road about 50 yards. Just before the end of this road there is a large grassed area owned by the County on your left with a large yellow steel gate.

Go through the gate and about half way along the field on your right, there is a trail leading down toward the water. Take this trail.

In about 30 yards, you will see a big old ironwood tree and a trail to your left that leads to a cemetary. There is a sign that says: 'Do Not Desecrate Grave Area'. The main trail goes straight through, so you do do go toward the graves, although this is a short interesting side trip for those interested.

In another 15 yards, there is a second ironwood tree right beside the trail.

The next ironwood tree down the trail hides our 'Red Sand Beach' Letterbox.

The Letterbox is hidden behind this third tree under some lava rocks at the base of the tree.

If you are on your return trip from Red Sand Beach, this tree is the first reasonably sized tree as you start up the hill toward the end of the hike.

Once you have found the 'Red Sand Beach' Letterbox and signed in, thank you for replacing the Letterbox to ensure the integrity of its hiding place.

Please ensure that there are sufficient stones protecting the Letterbox so that it is well protected from the view of passersby. Thank you.

We hope you enjoy the search and the beautiful scenery as you take the short hike out to Red Sand Beach hidden and protected by the Ka'uiki Hill.

Please contact us by email at peter@brill.ca to let us know you found this box and the condition it is in, plus any other comments you may have. We look forward to hearing from you.

Happy Letterboxing!
