Description

Playmakers have placed the 'Waikamoi Nature Trail' Letterbox near the end of the Waikamoi Nature Trail located between the 9 and 10 mile markers on the road to Hana, #360.

The Waikamoi Nature Trail has two nature loops, one of about 10 minutes and the second of about 30 minutes.

The Letterbox is located near the end of the longer trail which offers a minor elevation gain of about 200 feet.

This short hike offers a pleasant diversion from the long drive to Hana and is a good short stop to allow you to stretch your legs, get a bit of exercise and, of course, find another Letterbox.

There are two trails at the start of the hike. The right trail is the most direct route, but the short trail to the left only adds a couple of minutes to your hike and offers better initial vistas of the highway below you and the usually dry Waikamoi Stream valley beyond.

The forest around you consists of mostly eucalyptus, hala and strawberry guava trees with lots of evidence of invasive bamboo.

Having taken the left trail, you will shortly come to an intersection in the trail. The right trail (this is the 10 minute hike) will take you back to your vehicle.

Follow the left trail (this is the 30 minute hike and leads to the Letterbox) which has a couple of stops for viewing and ultimately climbs up to an open grassed picnic area with a BBQ. The Letterbox is located near this open grassed picnic area.

There is a sign at the top of the picnic area that says "End of Trail", though if you would like to hike further, you could take this trail and bear left at the first fork which will lead you down to a stream and dam.

Once you have found the 'Waikamoi Nature Trail' Letterbox, you can head down the jeep road at the lower left of the open grassed picnic area. There is a sign that says "Stay on the Trail", however, most hikers ignore the sign and take this rarely used road. Keep right on this trail which will take you directly to your vehicle.

If you still want to hike a bit more, near the top of the jeep road, there is another jeep road going to your left. It offers a short diversion down to a reservoir. Otherwise, simply bear right and head straight down the first jeep road to the parking area.

Clues

From the picnic shelter at the end of the trail, look back down the hill. You arrived on the trail on the right and you will see the jeep road on the left.

Head down toward the jeep road.

Just before you get to the jeep road, there is a paper eucalyptus tree just off the grassed area to your left.

The 'Waikamoi Nature Trail' Letterbox is hidden behind this tree at the base under some lava rocks.

Once you have found the 'Waikamoi Nature Trail' Letterbox and signed in, thank you for replacing the Letterbox to ensure the integrity of its hiding place.

Please ensure that there are sufficient stones protecting the Letterbox so that it is well protected from the view of passersby. Thank you.

We hope you enjoy the search and the nice scenery on this short hike.

Please contact us by email at peter@brill.ca to let us know you found this box and the condition it is in, plus any other comments you may have. We look forward to hearing from you.

Happy Letterboxing!
