Difficulty: Easy - Drive by.

We always see kokopelli on petroglyph panels, postcards, business logos, keychains, and a ton of other places. However, in the winter we happened upon kokopelli enjoying winter sports just like the rest of us do in Moab.

Clues: Drive south of town a few miles to the turn-off for Ken's Lake and the LaSal Loop Road. The turn-off is about 2 miles past the Spanish Trail Arena. Turn on Airport Rd. and when it deadends, turn right onto what will be the LaSal Loop Rd. (From the turn-off from Hwy. 191 it is about 8 miles to Koko.) Follow the LaSal Loop as it winds it's way up to the mountains. Go a little ways past the "Entering Manti-LaSal National Forest" sign and park inbetween the "Route Markers Designate Open Roads" sign and the "Be careful with Fire" sign. On your right is a small point with rocks and junipers on it. Walk up to the point on the left side of the trees. Between two large rocks is koko in his winter cabin.

This box is right below the normal snow level, and might be muddy, but shouldn't get snowed in for long periods. It is on the way to the Warner Lake Box, which is snowed in until probably May.

The LaSal Loop is a wonderful scenic road starting from south of Moab, going through the mountains with aspens and lakes, and coming down in Castle Valley and back to Moab via the river road along the Colorado River. The views of the canyonlands and redrocks are spectacular on a clear day!
