Bird House Series
Black Hill Regional Park

Boxes maintenanced and rehidden 5/15/2007

Difficulty: Easy, 1/4 mile round trip. The area where the box is located is a great summer time bird watching area, especially by the water.

Birdwell Hotel
Enter the park and go straight. At Black Hill Road take a right. Follow the road down and across the water. Park in the first parking lot you see on the right. Find the NW corner of the lot and take Cabin Branch Trail. Go left at the first "Y" in the trail. Shortly there after, you will come to a clearing where the fire pit is, take a left onto a smaller grassy trail. At the next "Y" in the trail take a right and begin counting paces. Stop when you count 50. From this point you will see a cypress tree beside you. Count this and two other cypress tree on your right. At the third cypress tree start counting steps and find a small path on your right. Take this path as it leads you almost in a circle. Look ahead to the two, 2 in 1 pine trees. At the base of the first pine tree is the Birdwell Hotel.

Log Cabin for the Birds
Continue on down the trail, continue down the trail, down the hill and begin looking to your right for the orange pole in the woods. (in the summer the area becomes dense with growth, be very observent as you descend the hill) From this pole, walk 28 paces to a large cypress tree on the right. In the branches you will find what you seek in a burlap bag. Be very careful removing and replacing the box into the bag. You should not have to remove the bag itself, just take the box from within.

Chickadee Heaven
Back to the trail and continue on until you reach a “T” intersection. At the intersection, take a reading of 330 degrees and walk 30 paces to an old rotted stump. Look within the branches leaning against the stump, wedged between the branches of the fallen tree you will find Chickadee Heaven. Return to the trail.

Home Sweet Home
At the “T” in the intersection take a right, up the hill to the next orange pole in the middle of the trail. From the pole take a reading of 120 degrees and find an old Dogwood tree. Behind the dogwood, at its base you will find Home Sweet Home. ****PLEASE be sure to check the box from the trail from each side of the tree after covering to be sure no blue from the lid shows through. It was a tough box to cover. THANKS!
