The Main Entrance to Beaverdam Park is located at 8687 Roaring Springs Road (the end of the road). The road is almost in Gloucester Courthouse. The Park is open 7 days a week year-round and only closes on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

BEAVERDAM PARK - "CRESCENT MOON LETTERBOXES"

This can be a long, long hike. It's about .5 miles to "Swan" and 1.5 miles one way to "Crescent Moon". Especially if you go for both boxes. Check the park map and locate "Morgan Bridge" and "Camp". There is a box near each of these locations. #1 can be reached in about 45 minutes to an hour, so if you just want a short hike then this round trip will be...eh...2 hours. It's located just before the Morgan Bridge.
If you seek a nice long hike along a beautiful lake then head for box #2. That hike will take about 3-4 hours round trip, and takes you all the way to The Camp.
Strollers and baby joggers can make it but be advised there are many roots and hills can be steep at times. In the summer, for sure, bring bug spray and water.

Box #1 - "SWAN"

Begin your journey in front of the bathrooms. To the left is the "Hiking Trail". Follow the "Hiking Trail". You will see a long foot bridge crossing over a finger of the lake...dont cross it...it's part of the "Nature Trail". Keep on the "Hiking Trail". Soon you will come to a junction of trails. Lets stay with the "Hiking Trail" so go left. Cross a tiny bridge with a pond on your right. The trail comes to a T, follow it left. Is there a "Southern Red Oak" marker? Good, keep going. Up four giant plank steps. Look for "Virginia Pine" sign. Cross the "Cardinal" bridge. When you come to a small concrete drain pipe under the trail STOP on the pipe. Turn 90 degrees right and head up the hill. 20 or so steps up the hill you'll find the "Swan" in the hollow of a tall tree.

Box #2 - "CRESCENT MOON OUTHOUSE"

Continue down the "Hiking trail" and cross the "Morgan Bridge". At the end of the bridge the trail veers left along the lake. Soon you will pass a tree with three trunks. ??? Three trunks? Look for "Mandi + Frank" the keep going. Pass under a tree leaning over the trail, and down a slope that passes an earthen dam covered by rocks and vines. Hiking, hiking. Soon you will come to a wider trail that leads left, down to the water, or right, up the trail. Lets go right...up the trail. About 75 feet up you'll come to an intersection of trails. Go down the second trail on your left. Look for the Outhouse on your left. Stand in front of the Outhouse. On the left side of the outhouse is a larger poplar tree with three trunks. The "Crescent Moon Outhouse" box is under a root, covered by leaves. Please cover it well before you go.

You have a long hike back. Hope it was fun? Happy Trails.
