Yes, it appears that The Duck has flown the coop. We checked in on him only to find that his home, the 6 trunk tree with his middle initial carved into one of the trunks, had been remodeled - and we don't think the remodelers had his permission. two of the trunks had been sawed off, and a third, the one with his initial, had been cracked off. The Duck was nowhere to be seen. We will probably replace this box, since The Duck is near and dear to our hearts, but due to our hectic schedules he won't be making a reappearance any time soon.

Ah, duct tape. Where would MacGyver, or the rest of us, be without it? And who’s the most famous duct tape mascot of them all? No, not MacGyver, The Duck! THE Duck. C’mon, you know the duck we’re talking about…the Manco Duck! Manco T. Duck, known worldwide for his bright yellow feathers, his no-nonsense white painter’s cap, and his wing that waves the way to sticky grandeur. Although Manco T. Duck is now known as Trust E. Duck (yes, that duck really has not one, but two names) he’s still The Duck that represents the tape that holds the United States together.

In the 80’s, Jack Kahl, then-CEO and owner of Manco, Inc., was inspired to have a mascot created for their Duck Tape brand of duct tape, and Manco T. Duck was born. In 2002, when Manco became Henkel Consumer Adhesives, Manco T. Duck’s name was legally changed to Trust E. Duck (to find out what that E. stands for, and other fun facts about duct tape, visit the company’s webpage at www.henkelca.com, or become an official member of the Duck Tape Club at www.ducktape.com).

Henkel Consumer Adhesives is based in Avon, Ohio, and to celebrate the phenomenon that duct tape is, the first annual Duck Tape Festival was held at Veteran's Memorial Park in Avon during Father’s Day weekend, June 2004. To commemorate this yearly event, and The Duck that surpasses all other ducks, we created this letterbox.

Clues:

Take I-90 to the Route 83 exit (if you're coming from the East, keep an eye out on the right side of I-90 for the Henkel Consumer Adhesives Avon Offices, marked by The Duck, of course). Head South on Route 83. At Detroit Road (aka Route 254) turn right. Veteran’s Memorial Park is a few traffic lights down, on the left (after the small park with the gazebo). Click here for a map of the area.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Despite this letterbox being dedicated to duct tape and Duck Tape and the Duct Tape Festival, please do not hunt for this box the actual weekend of the Duct Tape Festival (which is usually Fathers' Day Weekend). There are lots and lots and lots of people, and the way the festival is set up the box will be hard to reach. Visit www.avonducttapefestival.com for specifics on festival dates and activities.

The initial drive into Veteran's Memorial Park is paved, but then splits into three gravel drives. Take the middle drive, the one with the "Speed Limit 15" sign, all the way to the end, where the soccer fields are. Park the car and head towards the red drinking fountain.

From this red drinking fountain walk at 75°, about 42 paces, till you reach the big sewer grate. From the grate, face south and walk 120 paces. You'll notice a partially green tree on your left. Walking towards the green tree, you'll see a fallen log on its left, pointing towards a rotting stump at 30°. This isn't the stump you want, though. You want to walk towards the rotting stump at 90°, with the skinny "U" tree next to it. (Please watch your step, evidently the nursery next door dumps things in these woods.)

9 more paces at 90° is a second rotting stump, this one with moss on it. 14 paces at 60° is a third rotting stump. From this third rotting stump, walk 7 paces at 110° to the 6 trunk tree. You'll know you're at the right place, The Duck's marked the spot with his newest middle initial. Where there should be a 7th trunk is a hole. Here hides the box, hidden under leaves and sticks and camouflage Duck Brand duct tape.

Disclaimer: Neither Doodle nor Deedle work for Henkel Consumer Adhesives, we just think that duct tape is really cool.

Our Fine Print: Please be kind, be sure to re-hide (well) in the same location you found the box, with everything in tact! If this letterbox requires maintenance or needs our attention, or if you want to show us the Dunkleosteus you made out of duct tape, we can be reached at doodle_n_deedle @ yahoo.com
