UPDATE: Boxes alive & well 3/9/08.

This Georgia nature center derives its name from the Cherokee language meaning “new green earth”. Located in a 1,300-acre Nature Preserve, the center has been building environmental literacy for Georgians for more than 24 years. The Nature Preserve is a designated wilderness area.

The nature center hosts more than twelve miles of hiking trials through pine forests, hardwood ridges, streams, and wetlands. There is no charge to use the trails. The trails are open from 8 am to dusk, every day of the year.

Please be aware that on weekdays, large numbers of school children are generally utilizing the trails between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. Copperheads and rattlesnakes are native to this area. They are occasionally seen on the trails; it is advisable to use a stick before reaching into any holes or crevices! Also be wary of poison ivy, wasps, spiders, etc.

Park in the lot near building. Follow service driveway past pavilion and towards building. This is where the trail begins – you’ll be following the Dodd Trail (red blazes). Cross the first bridge; there will be a trail sign on left. You’ll be walking parallel to a small creek. Pass two red blazes on left. Stay right on trail past second trail sign. At the next red blaze (right) look for a tree with a furry vine (be careful-that's poison ivy!) on it on the right. From that tree look across the creek and slightly uphill for an old stump low on the hill. Box #1 is behind & underneath. This small yet dangerous aquatic reptile has a long neck, a powerful jaw and a vicious temper. Please rehide so box is hidden from view.

Continue further on Dodd trail. Pass a bridge on right. Pass by creek over flat ground. Trail curves to the left, past rail and over rocks on trail. After next rail overlook stop at tree with red blaze. Facing creek, with blaze tree on right, site 205° to a suit-case sized slanted rock half-way up hill and partially behind a tree. Look behind rock under two small flat rocks for Box #2. Hopefully you won’t cross paths with a real one during your journey, but this very venomous reptile is usually heard before it is seen. Please re-place smaller rocks as you found them, so the box is shielded.

Continue on trail back to the nature center. The nature center offers live animal exhibits with native fish, amphibians, and reptiles, red tailed hawks and other nature exhibits. Admission (except during special exhibitions and events) to the nature center and museum is $5 for adults and $3 for children between 2-12 $3, and under 2 years old are free.

Have fun!
