Directions : From I-264 traveling East in Virginia Beach,
VA, take the Lynnhaven North Exit. Turn right (east) on Virginia
Beach Blvd (US 58) and travel to Great Neck Road. Turn left (north)
and travel 3.3 miles watching for Frank W. Cox High School. Turn left
just before the school on Shorehaven Drive. The park is straight
ahead. Drive to the west end of the park and follow the road as it
turns to the left. Park at the basketball court area closest to
Shelter #4. Your trek to Egg #1 begins at the sidewalk. The park
closes at dusk.

From Route 60/Shore Drive, turn South on Great Neck Road. Frank W.
Cox High School will be on the right at the stoplight. Turn right on
Shorehaven Drive. See directions above to the park.

Walking distance: Approximately 1/2 mile, round trip. Great
for kids with adults, due to road walking.

Supplies needed: Compass

Introduction : Easter egg hunts, in which children search
for dyed eggs hidden by the "Easter Bunny," originate from pagan
festivals honoring Eostre, the goddess of spring. This "Eggcellent
Eggstravaganza" is designed to allow you to participate in an egg
hunt yourself. You will have the opportunity to find 6 colored eggs,
each holding a different holiday stamp for the season. Be sure to
replace each "egg" carefully so others may also enjoy this special
"Eggstravaganza."

Eggcellent Extravaganza #1

Near Shelter #4, take the sidewalk east, and then south crossing
over the wooden bridge. Continue on the sidewalk to Shelter #5. Stand
at the NW corner of the shelter on the outside of the railing. Head
80 degrees, about 25 steps, ducking under and into the pines. Look
for a large south-leaning stump. Under bark and pine needles on the
south side at ground level, find your first egg. Replace very
carefully and cover your trail.

Eggcellent Extravaganza #2

From Shelter #5, walk SW along the edge of the woods. You will
pass some "beach" volleyball courts, a rocky creekbed and will soon
be at a small red brick building with a wooden fence. At the corner
of the wooden fence where the pennant-shaped gate is largest, look
under leaves and vines. A right angle of wood is where you'll find
the egg hidden in green.

Eggcellent Extravaganza #3

Walk out to the road and begin walking toward the east. You'll be
walking on the left side of the road, facing oncoming traffic. Please
be careful. Pass a pole, #NE49, and continue to where the curb ends.
Notice the direction of the long openings in the drainage grate. They
point away from the road to Egg #3. Hint: There are broken pieces of
a small log right at the spot where the egg rests.

Eggcellent Extravaganza #4

Walk to pole #14 and look behind it, slightly to the east to see
two trees, one live and one skyward pointing broken stump. Between
the two, look for green hiding egg #4.

Eggcellent Extravaganza #5

Continue walking to the east and pass a lane that rhymes with
"Have it!" Look for the chain attached to an orange pole on the left
side of the road. Look carefully, because it might be hidden by
vines. Cross the road so that when you reach the other side you are
directly across from this chain/pole. Facing east, take 17 small
woman steps along the road and stop. Look to the right just beyond
three trees. Egg #5 is hiding in green anchored by a "sort of pyramid
shaped" piece of granite.

Eggcellent Extravaganza #6

Return to the safe side of the road and continue walking east.
Look for a dog's "Other Best Friend." Just past it you'll see a
person-made path. Take 5 steps from the edge of the road along this
path and look behind a tree on your right for green under a log to
find egg #6. Congratulations, you should have found all 6 "eggs" in
the "Eggcellent Extravaganza!"

To return to your car you may retrace your steps or follow the
road around to the main entrance to the park. Please be respectful of
park rules and do not walk on the berm.
