I scouted this site again and decided to move the box to the "Which Way" Letterbox 3 miles to the east. It is now Box #9 in the Runaway Scrape Letterbox Series. - Tall Texan (8/8/07)

This box is closed.

This is a frustrating location for a letterbox. I have tried repeatedly for 3 years to place a box here only to have it reported missing. This is a special place, I am moving the box to a less-travelled nearby location.

Difficulty: Easy - just thinking required. The Right To Fight Letterbox is located in New Kentucky Park on FM 2920 in Northwest Harris County. This is sacred ground to Texas historians. It is the exact spot where the Texan Army turned to engage the main column of the Mexican Army after the fall of the Alamo garrison some weeks before. The drama comes from the fact that General Sam Houston had not told anyone else his plans. The old wagon road crossing the area forked at this spot. The left fork meant escape and safety in the United States. The right fork to Harrisburg meant being trapped against Galveston Bay and the San Jacinto River. Here Sam Houston's plan was finally revealed. The Texan army took the right fork and risked death. It must have been a moment of profound clarity, with each man knowing exactly what had to be done. To me this is where Texas was truly born. A good description of this event is at: http://www.texasbob.com/travel/tbt_whichway.html

Directions to the Park - The Right To Fight microbox is located at New Kentucky Park off FM 2920, just east of intersection w/Roberts Cemetry Rd., about 10 mi. west of Tomball . The address of the park is 21710 F.M. 2920. To get to 2920 you can either take Highway 249 or 290 (exit Bauer Road and turn right) See the following link for specific park information: http://www.pct3.hctx.net/PNewK/

To the Letterbox

Cast a wish to find the clue,
from this spot the direction to.
A hiding place just within,
a mute witness to the hearts of men.
This witness was the most likely here,
when an army of farmers faced their fear.
(Santa Ana had no hint, how much the Alamo meant.)
Chose your path like men of old,
and count 50 so that you can hold,
The microbox invisible below,
love expressed so long ago.
Remember this spot as you go out
to face choices clothed in doubt.
How the sun shines it’s greatest light,
on those who sometimes decide
it is right to fight.
