Marietta, the first settlement in the Northwest Territory, is home to one of the oldest pioneer burial grounds west of the Appalachian Mountains: Mound Cemetery. General Rufus Putnam, who led the settlers here and founded the city, donated the plot of land surrounding this large Indian mound in January 1801, and the first burial took place in October of that same year--that of Revolutionary War veteran Robert Taylor. At the center of the graveyard is the Indian mound, which is thirty feet tall and can be climbed using a staircase. Historians agree that the Hopewell Indians built the mound, even though most of Marietta's famous earthworks were built by the Adena. The above and other information on Mound Cemetery can be found on the web at: http://www.forgottenoh.com/Cemeteries/mound.html

NOTE: THIS BOX ALONG WITH THE 2 MARIETTA COLLEGE BOXES HAVE GONE MISSING BUT WILL BE REPLACED AS A SERIES IN A NEARBY PARK OR LOCATION THAT HAS LESS EFFICIENT GROUNDS KEEPERS. THIS NOTE ALONG WITH THE MIA IN THE HEADING WILL BE REMOVED WHEN THAT OCCURS.
I AM VERY SORRY THAT I HAVE NOT DONE IT ALREADY BUT I JUST VERIFIED IT 7/10/06
SAFARI MAN

Please bring a stamp pad, your stamp, an old rag and a pen.
Difficulty: Easy
Terrain: Drive Up. Distance: Less than 200 yards to quest and back
Time: Less than 1/2 hour once you park the car there.

Clues:
From downtown go west on 3rd or 4th Street until intersecting Scammel Street. Turn away from the river and follow Scammel to the top of the hill. If you drive into the cemetery you've gone to far. Park somewhere close to the main entrance at 5th and Scammel and walk to one of the man gates at the entrance. Enter the cemetery and follow the brick walk to the middle obelisk on the right hand side of the walk (the rose granite one). Turn right at this obelisk and follow this row of stones to the fence line. At the large tree, which hopefully is nearby, you will find a large scar at the base with a rock lying up against it. Very discretely move the rock aside and beneath the twigs and dust you will find the black box.
Take the box and move to another spot not far and do the stamping. Replace all items into the baggie and box and reseal the box well. Discretely replace the box in the tree base and replace the rock as you found it. Please continue your walk around the cemetery, observing the graves of revolutionary war soldiers and others from the early 1800s to present. Climb the stairs to the top of the Indian mound so you can tell everyone you've done it. Not a lot of other people can claim this accomplishment. As you tour, please do not disturb anything and when done here there are several other boxes in Marietta and the towns down river to help fill out your day.
