History: Marietta's first cemetery was established in 1796. Among those buried here were the families of Douglas, David & David Putnam Jr., Levi Barber and Paul & Henry Fearing. Over 1200 burials have been made in its five acres during its 200 year existence. Many early headstones have been lost to weather and flooding.

Please bring a stamp pad, your stamp, an old rag, gloves? and a pen.
Difficulty: Easy
Terrain: Moderately sloped land.
Distance: 200 yards, partly uphill and 200 yards down hill returning.

Clues:
From downtown Marietta cross over the Muskingum river into Harmar and immediately get on Gilman street which parallels the river between the two auto bridges. Head toward the other bridge until you find Wood Street and go to the end of Wood Street. At the end of Wood turn toward the right and you will see the entrance to Harmar Cemetery. Park and go to the entrance to the Cemetery. Look out into the cemetery following the tire marks to a tall tree that starts as one and branches to three about 10' above ground. Take ~ 77 steps to this tree and then go to the opposite side. Take a heading of ~340* and go 55 steps to a very large Sycamore Tree. Climb up to the high side of this tree and take a heading of ~ 270* and go 55 steps to a rectangle made of what looks like concrete curbing. Go to the N.E. corner of this rectangle and take a heading of ~ 355* and go into the edge of the woods by a path to a smallish tree beside the path. The Harmar Cemetery letterbox is under a rock at the base of this tree. After you have completed the stamping, please replace the book and stamp into the baggy and seal it well, then put the baggy into the box and seal it well and replace it as you found it for other boxers. When you get the time please send me a note on the condition of the box and contents and how your day went. Have fun hunting more boxes in Marietta and then down river if you have time.
