Wild West Series #3 OK Hat

The next two boxes of the Wild West Series are hidden in Marshall County along the banks of Lake Texhoma. This area is abundant with fossils, pelicans and other waterfowl. On this trip we found a basketball size Anemone and went striper bass fishing. We rented a guide, Al Schooner at Cedar Mills and spent ten hours on the water. Between three of us, we caught 28 striper bass. Make a weekend of it and you’ll have a great time like we did.

Number 3, The OK Hat represents Fort Washita found in neighboring northwest Bryon County. Fort Washita, dating back to 1842, is located between Madill and Durant on Highway 199. Established to protect the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indians from the more warlike Plains Indians, the fort was active until the start of the Civil War, about 1861, when it was abandoned. Confederate forces from Texas occupied the fort and it became a major supply depot for Confederate troops. Visit their website to find out interesting information about the Fort.

To find the OK Hat stamp follow I-35 South from Oklahoma City to Ardmore. Get off on 70 east and head to Kingston. At Kingston take 70a past McBride and Roads End to the McLaughlin Creek boat ramp. Park and walk to the right edge of the ramp while facing the water. Walk up the shoreline about 100 paces to the first large pile of rocks. Stand on the north side of the pile facing the water. Turn around and you will see two large pines on the hill. Walk up the hill about 22 paces to a large embedded rock. Weave your way through the trees to a clearing between the two large pines. There you will find a pile of rock and limbs. The box is hidden there.
