kraP doowtnuoM is located 12 miles east of Parkersburg, on US Rt. 50, at the Volcano Road Exit. Perfect for the camping enthusiast or anyone loving the outdoors, this area has more than 2000 acres of natural, rolling woodlands, along with a well-stocked 50-acre lake. All facilities are handicapped accessible. The park boasts 500 acres of primitive campsites and 81 blacktop sites, some of which have electrical, water, and sewer hookups. The park contains an abundant supply of picnic tables, fire rings, and barbecue grills. It has an open gun range that is leased by the Department of Natural Resources. The lake, which is stocked four times a year, contains bass, muskies, and trout. Twenty-three acres of the park have been set aside for ATV trails. Some are partially used by mountain bikes, but there are also approximately seven miles of single-track trails for bikes. The entire park is open for hikers.
CLUES:
Difficulty: All are fairly easy
Terrain. Hilly but all placements are fairly close to trail.
Total distance from car to all 4 and back is approx. 700 yards.
Please bring your stamp, a stamp pad, compass, pen and an old rag to wipe off the box/your hands.

In Parkersburg go east on H.W. 50 until passing under I-77 bridge where you set your odometer. Continue east for 11.8 miles where you will turn right onto Volcano road. After making turn, stay left and then turn right after passing the Marina and at the signs showing hiking and boating to the right. At the large, white Marina sign stay left and follow that road, past the fishing pier, all the way to its end and pull off at the end to the right side of the road and park.

Box 1) Big Trout( replaced 5/5/2011) Go up to the trail head across the road and begin the hunt at the Walter Taitt Trail sign. At the yellow post proceed 32 steps up the gravel path to a large pine tree on the left and stop (tree ws cut down and now only short stump remains but there is a pine on the right of the path also) . From the short stump, Take a heading of ~ 360* to a tree that is broken off at the top about 15' above ground and go about 23 steps to it.(Tree is now fallen over). From fallen tree's stump take a heading of about 080ยบ, uphill, and see the large root section of a fallen tree. Find the Big Trout under rocks on your side of the roots on the right side. Big Trout is definitely out of water at the base of this deadfall. The day I placed this series of boxes, I counted almost 50 fishermen on the banks, pier and in boats out fishing for trout. They did not find this one however. Do your stamping and then replace everything and reseal the baggy and box well to keep out the moisture so Big Trout does not decide to come back to life in the water. Now replace the box as you found it and head back to the gravel trail and head up hill.

Box 2) Beetle Boy Proceed up the gravel path to the sign showing Hay stack and Collarbone cut off, where you will turn left onto the dirt path. Follow this path to the Y where you will go right. Upon reaching the Collarbone cut off sign start counting steps until you reach 50. (Note: last finder said the step count was 90) Take a heading of ~ 005* and take 12 steps to a fallen tree with a 3' high stump. Beetle Boy is living at the base of this tree on the north side under some bark and limbs. Discretely dig him out of his hiding place, do your stamping, replace everything and reseal everything tight so it stays nice and dry and then return the box as you found it, hopefully well covered. Now you can go back to that last Y and head up the other(Haystack) trail or from here you can take a heading of ~ 010* and go a short ways until you intersect the other trail and head to the right on it.

Box 3) Forest Hiker follow this trail until coming to the trail sign, then go 35 steps and stop. Take a heading of ~ 280* and take 11 steps to a fairly large tree. Take a heading from this tree of ~ 220* and go down a gully and up to a tree with a large hole at the base (~ 28 steps down and up the gully). Forest Hiker is resting up in the base of this tree under leaves and rocks but will come out with some coaxing. After stamping and returning/resealing everything , please replace the box and conceal it well in the hole. Now head back to the gravel path where you left it.

Box 4) King Of The Forest Back on the gravel path head away from your car for ~ 150 yards, passing the culvert and on up the way passing a large pile of cut up logs just to the left side of the path. A short ways ahead a needle covered old path Ys slightly to the left. Upon reaching this path, take it and go 8 steps and stop. Look left at about 050* to a small pile of logs over a stump and take ~ 7 steps to it. Here lives the King Of The Forest. He comes out at night and no one messes with him in all of the forest. He sleeps during the day and will not awaken so it is safe for you to dig him out from under the bark and limbs and do a stamping with him. (actually it might be a she since my wife often looks like this in the morning). When done with your stamping, return and reseal everything well and discretely return the King to his sleeping quarters and conceal him well. Hope you enjoyed your quest of these 4 letterboxes and now you can get out the clues for the other boxes in this park.
